CCRadio Solar Digital with Bluetooth®, AM, FM, Weather + Alert Windup Emergency Radio

The CCRadio Solar is a small digital portable radio that is successful as an emergency radio but the form and format function invite you to use it daily. Placed in a sunny window it's perfect for the morning news. Audio is a surprise; it's accurate, pleasing and has two modes. A miser mode to conserve battery power in a true emergency and a high-power mode for an even better audio experience. Reception is good for the size. The almost brick size depth and unique UV resistant rubber perimeter is concave on the bottom which makes it inherently stable. The flashlight is above average in brightness and color because of the selected high-quality LED. The hand crank folded and inlaid on in the back is the only visible clue that it's an emergency radio.

The included lithium-ion battery can be recharged by wind-up, solar panel, your USB port, or optional AC charging adapter (not included). When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the radio will run more than 50 hours or charge your phone from the approximately 50% level to 100% level. It can also be powered by (3) “AA” alkaline batteries (not included) for approximately 50 hours in low power mode or 35 hours in high power mode.

I brought the first CCRadio Solar home and my wife absconded with it until our designer/illustrator had to beg to get it back for documentation. To get it back from him was also overly arduous. I have never seen a radio so coveted. It is about hand size and it stays charged in a sunny window with an oversize solar panel which means it may not need a power assist for years. Bob Crane

I have the radio in the sun but the battery icon does not blink.

The icon blinks when charging by using the micro USB input and the crank. It does not blink when charging in the sun. (sorry)

Why is it easy to crank the radio when the battery is fully charged?

When the battery starts to get low it will accept more current and it will become harder to crank.

Why won’t my radio power up when using the rechargeable battery? It’s new!

  • Make sure your battery selection switch is in the correct position titled “LI”. The battery selection switch is very small and located under the rubber flap.
  • Be sure that the battery is oriented correctly inside the battery compartment and that you have removed the plastic pull-tab that is included with the radio initially.
  • The battery may have a thin invisible coating over the positive and negative terminals that is diminishing the connectivity to the springs. Remove the battery and gently clean the positive and negative terminals with a little sandpaper or nail file for a few seconds.
  • If all else fails try charging the battery with the included USB cable for about 9 hours.

My radio will not charge when plugged into power.

Make sure that you have removed the small plastic pull tab between the battery and the contact. Also be sure that your battery is oriented correctly in the battery compartment.

How long will the CCRadio Solar play on a fresh set of alkaline batteries?

Approximately 35 hours of play on high power mode.

Approximately 50 hours of play on low power mode.

What type of lithium battery is used in the CCRadio Solar?

The battery included with the CCRadio Solar is a 18650 Rechargeable Battery – Protected 3.7V Li-ion 3400mAh.

How long will the CCRadio Solar play on a fully charged lithium battery?

More than 50 hours depending on volume level and power mode.

Can I have the weather alert set and listen to AM or FM at the same time?

Yes you can.

When charging in the sun using the solar panel, using the USB cable or the optional AC Adapter, does the switch need to be set to Li?

No.

Will the battery indicator show full bars when charged in the sun or hand cranked?

Yes, once the battery reaches 4 volts. The following charge times are based on the mAh of the Li-On battery and the mAh of the charging systems for each method.

  • Charging in full sun can take approximately 42 hours
  • Charging with cranking can take approximately 10-12 hours
  • The fastest way to charge is to use the USB cable or the AC Adapter (sold separately). This method can take up to 9 hours

How do I restore the radio to factory defaults?

With the power OFF, press and hold the memory buttons #1 and #5 for five seconds. You will hear a tone to signify it has been done

My fully charged Li-ion battery does not power the radio. The screen is blank.

The radio needs a small amount of electricity to deactivate the protection circuit. Please rotate the wind-up handle a few times, or place the radio briefly in the sun. When the display appears, the radio should be ready for operation.

Why do I hear more static with the optional AC charging adapter than I have heard from older AC adapters that I have used in the past on older radio models?

Many years ago, a worldwide ban went into effect mandating the phase out of linear AC adapters in favor of switching AC adapters.

Switching adapters are smaller, lighter, and far more energy efficient than linear adapters. However, the downside is that they produce about 10 times more line noise than their linear adapter counterparts when listening to the radio. The AC Charging Adapter we offer is recommended for charging only.

What are the steps for setting and activating the Weather Alert?

  1. Turn the radio on by pressing and releasing the red power button (on the front of the radio).
  2. Press and release the Band button (top button on left top of the radio) until WX shows on the display.
  3. Change the channel with the Up or Down tuning buttons until you hear your local NOAA Weather Broadcast.
  4. Press and hold the Band button until the desired hours of monitoring (4hr, 8hr, 16hr or on) are selected.

Note: While the weather alert is activated, AM and FM radio is still accessible. The display light will flash once every few seconds to remind you that the NOAA Weather Alert is "ON".

  1. When NOAA issues a weather alert, the radio will continuously beep for two minutes.
  2. Press and release the red Power Button to listen to the weather broadcast.
  3. To de-activate the Weather Alert, press and hold the Alert button for 3 seconds or until “OFF” is displayed.

Can I use 3 “AA” Lithium type batteries in my radio?

Technically NO. We do not recommend using "AA" Lithium type batteries due to the higher voltage they produce. Even though the specifications for some lithium batteries state 1.5 volts, they can register up to 1.8 volts when they are fresh. Our products are designed to operate on a very light load. Using "AA" lithium batteries that register higher (using a voltmeter) than 1.6 volts can cause damage to our products.

Will the included rechargeable battery charge when I have it plugged in using the USB cable or the optional AC Charging Adapter while the radio is powered ON?

Yes.

Does the switch need to be set to LI for the included rechargeable battery to charge?

No. The rechargeable battery will charge whether the switch is set for AA or LI when using the charging jack, crank or solar panel.

When the switch is set for LI, the radio will play using the charge from the rechargeable battery.
